  1. What is the purpose of Paddle to the Sea?
    • Paddle to the Sea raises awareness and funding to help protect and restore the Tuolumne River by vividly demonstrating our shared dependence on this limited resource. It connects the many diverse communities that rely on the river to grow our food, supply clean drinking water, power our homes and businesses, and provide world-class recreational opportunities. It is sponsored by, and it is a benefit for, the Tuolumne River Trust.
  2. How do I sign up for to paddle a particular leg?
    •  Registering for a specific leg of our journey is easier than ever this year.  Click here for information about the different types of paddling available.  Click here to be directed to the registration page, which has further details about each leg.
  3. How do I create my personal or team fund-raising page?
    • Your fundraising page will be automatically created after you register, and you will receive an e-mail confirmation containing your login details. You will have the option to keep the default page or to customize it with your own photos and text.

  4. How do I pay my registration fee for paddling?
    • You can register now on our secure online registration site by clicking here. Once you register you'll have the option to pay via credit card or mail a check to our San Francisco office.  You can also register over the phone by calling 1-888-994-3344.  In addition to the registration fee, paddlers have a base fund-raising goal of $60, though we encourage you to go for more!  Prizes for fund-raising are described by clicking here
  5. Can I paddle without participating in the paddle-a-thon?
    • All paddlers are required to participate in the paddle-a-thon and meet the minimum fund-raising requirements of $60.  We've provided some great tools to get you started and will be here to support you at every step of the way to help you reach your goals.  Fundraising is a great way to involve your family, friends, and coworkers with your journey.  You also have the option of sponsoring yourself.  If you have questions or concerns with the paddle-a-thon, please contact our team at 1-888-994-3344 and we'll be happy to help. Access our fund-raising tips here.
  6. How do I register as a team?
    •  Team captains should register first (before the rest of their team) under "Start a Team"  and create a team name. Subsequently, team members can register under "Join a Team," and can select their team's name under a scroll down menu.  It's helpful if team captain's notify others of their team name, or pick a name that their teammates will easily identify.
  7. What if I don't have my own boat?
    • We can help get you in a boat, whether it is a raft for the exciting whitewater section, canoes from La Grange to Stockton, or sea kayaks for the Delta and San Francisco Bay.  Tuolumne River Trust has a fleet of canoes and equipment and you can reserve a spot with us for the canoeing legs. When you register, you will be asked whether you want to reserve a seat in a boat or if you prefer to bring your own.  Contact paddle@tuolumne.org for more information or if you have any questions.
  8. Can I bring my own boat?
    • Absolutely! All portions of the journey are open to paddlers with their own equipment.  You will still need to register so that we know you are coming, and because this is a paddle-a-thon fund-raiser, registration fees and the minimum $60 fund-raising goals are still required. Also, please keep in mind that private whitewater rafting trips require a permit.Tuolumne River Trust does not have the ability to issue permits.
  9. Do I need special training to paddle?
    •   It depends on which leg you want to paddle.
      • For the whitewater rafting trips, you do not need any special experience for the professionally guided trip led by ARTA River Trips.  You will need experience if you are guiding your own boat.
      • Flat-water canoeing and kayaking - Class I
No experience is necessary and beginners are welcome for all flat-water canoeing/river kayaking legs.  Tuolumne River Trust can supply you with all necessary equipment including a canoe, paddle, PFD, or you are welcome to bring your own boat and equipment.  We'll have a brief intro-to-paddling talk at the beginning of each day for those who either have no experience or need a refresher.  Daily paddling distances are approximately 10 miles.
      • Sea kayaking through the Bay-Delta will involve long paddles not meant for beginners. Sea kayakers with beginner-level experience are welcome to join the Waterfront leg on the final day of the trip.

  10. I'm not so big on paddling, how else can I get involved?
    •  We're hosting a handful of riverside parties along the way open to everyone. We hope paddlers and non-paddlers alike with join us for some fun in the sun along the way!

    • Some legs of Paddle to the Sea will be completed by the team that is going the entire trip, but these legs are less suitable for the general public and are not currently open for registration.

  17.  Are there any good places to go camping along the paddling legs?
    • Although the Tuolumne River Trust is not organizing camping, paddlers can use the information below to make camping arrangements.
      • The Pines Group Campground
        Groveland, Ca
        •   Groveland is close to our first paddling leg, near the whitewater rafting portions.
      • Turlock Lake State Recreation Area
        LaGrange, Ca
        • Leg 3 ends right at the park and Leg 4 embarks the next morning, so this is an excellent opportunity to go camping in between the two gorgeous paddling legs.
      • Caswel Memorial State Park
        Ripon, Ca
        •   This park is located about 30 minutes north of Modesto, and would be appropriate for Legs 6-9.
